To kick off your hopes of being recruited, baseball camps are a great way to jump start the process. Prior to the fall of your junior season coaches are not permitted to make direct contact with a player. However, baseball camps can provide a venue to meet coaches and let them evaluate your skills before such a date and without breaking the rules.
Here’s a suggestion, pick several schools that your are interested in possibly attending and view their websites to see what dates they may be hosting a summer or winter camp. Most colleges and universities will host at least one or the other while many of your bigger schools will typically entertain both camp dates. Pick a date that will work within your summer and/or winter schedules and sign up.
Not only are camps a great way to make an initial introduction and impression with a coaching staff, but they are also great for the following …
- Meeting new friends from around the region and sometimes across the country.
- Being very educational. A player may pick up a few things that when practiced, can take their game to the next level.
- An opportunity to check out the school campus to begin determining whether or not you like a big or small school, a rural or city school, etc. This is almost as important as the exposure you are seeking, because you will be spending the next 3-5 years of your life living on your own at the location/school you chose to attend.
- Generally school camps are as affordable or slightly less than showcases. Although you are attempting to perform for one college or university, often times a camp staff will be composed of coaches at other schools as well.
Good luck!
